How I'm using YNAB

I decided to post this after pratik asked me about it on Micro.blog.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Structure

I have my budget structured into 8 categories and 48 sub-categories. That's a lot... In my defense, 15 of those sub-categories are in 2 main categories and represent each online account to which I have a subscription.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Transactions

Each transaction I make (cash or card) is added manually to YNAB.
I don't like the bank auto-sync feature.
I like to be in control.

๐Ÿค Reconciliation

I log into my bank account around twice a month and check all transactions, marking them one by one as cleared in YNAB. This way I can also check that no unknown transactions were made from my accounts (I've never had this, but never say never).

๐Ÿ“ฉ Budgeting

At the beginning of each month, I do a reconciliation to be sure that the month that passed has all the transactions.

I try to NEVER start a new month with a negative balance on a category...

Then, I do my monthly budget :

It's simple, but sometimes the process can be a little long (especially when I have many transactions or when I did not do a reconciliation for more than 2 weeks).
